Academic Entrance Requirements.

  • One-year Program

Covenant’s one-year program has two distinct sets of admission requirements, each of which leads to a different diploma:

  • Diploma of Education

For admission to the one-year program leading to the Diploma of Education, applicants must hold an undergraduate university degree (e.g., Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science).

Candidates in the one-year program who possess a university degree may choose to prepare themselves for a teaching career in an elementary or a secondary school.

  • Those who wish to teach at the secondary level after graduating from Covenant College should have a degree with one or more specializations that can be linked to the subject areas of the secondary school curriculum.
  • Those who wish to teach at an elementary school should consider a broader range of courses at the university level.
  • A strong standing in English and French at the secondary and/or post-secondary level is an important asset for a teaching career at both the elementary and secondary levels.
  • Diploma of Education Studies

For admission to the one-year program leading to the Diploma of Education Studies, an applicant should:

  • Be a mature student who is at least 21 years of age and has been away from full-time secondary studies for at least two years;
  • Have a two-year college diploma (e.g., Early Childhood Education, Educational Assistant);
  • Have significant work experience in an educational setting.

Candidates with these qualifications will prepare themselves for a teaching career in elementary schools. A broad academic background with strong standing in English and French at the secondary level is an important asset.

  • Three-year Program

For admission to the 3-year pre-service program leading to the Diploma of Teaching, applicants must hold a secondary school diploma qualifying them for university entrance.

Candidates in this program will prepare themselves for a teaching career in elementary schools. It is important, therefore, that applicants for this program have a broad academic background. Strong standing in English and French are important assets.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to select secondary school courses at the University or University/College Preparation levels. Strong academic standing during the final two years of secondary study is required.

  • Foreign Students

Applicants from non-English speaking countries must pass an English proficiency test (e.g., TOEFL) or show proof of proficiency in reading and writing the English language in order to be admitted to the College.
